Fort Clinch State Park

Fort Clinch State Park is located on a peninsula near the northernmost point of Amelia Island, at the entrance to the Cumberland Sound. It covers 1,100 acres and includes Fort Clinch, one of the most well-reserved 19th century forts in the country. It's made up of sand dunes, plains, a maritime hammock and an estuarine tidal marsh. It's been a part of the park system since 1935 and it opened to the public in 1938.

The Fort offers daily tours and on the first weekend of each month, they perform living history re-enactments of a Civil War soldier's life in 1864 at Fort Clinch these include military drills, actors working in the fort's laundry, infirmary, kitchen, barracks, and carpenter shop.

In addition to exploring Fort Clinch, visitors can enjoy, sunbathing or shelling on over 3 miles of beach, birding or hiking on a six mile self-guided nature trail, and fishing in the surf or from their 1/2 mile long pier. Some fish you might catch are Flounder, Spotted Trout, Redfish and Sheepshead depending on where you're fishing. They have 2 camping grounds, one on the Amelia River, the other on the Atlantic side, both with hot-water restrooms and shower facilities. They have a visitor's center and place to picnic. While you're on the nature trail some wildlife you might see is the rare Purple Sandpiper, alligators, white-tailed deer, and other birds, while on or near the water you may see dolphins or manatees.
