Florida Beaches Affected by the Oil Spill

Updated: August 25, 2010

The State of Florida's Emergency Operations Center has officially discontinued their Oil Spill RECON missions for the BP-Deepwater Horizon disaster. Most Florida Panhandle beaches are reporting "ALL CLEAR" with only highly weathered and wildly scattered oil tar balls, most of which is less than an inch in size.

The affects of the oil spill has only impacted Northwest Florida beaches, primarily from Pensacola Beach to Panama City Beach.

The Impact of the Oil Spill has not Affected Florida Beaches beyond Northwest Florida. No other beaches have been touched by oil from the BP-Deepwater Horizon disaster.

Weather and Currents

NOAA forecast continue to indicate no significant amounts of oil moving toward the Loop Current. The Loop Current Ring, a circular current which was formerly part of the Loop Current, provides no clear path for oil to enter the Florida Straits. NOAA has suspended offshore oil spill trajectory forecasts as the threat to Florida Keys has subsided.

Fishing Closures

All Florida state waters, within 10.35 of shore, are currently open to fishing. Fishing in federal waters have been reopened to areas east of Pensacola within the range of most offshore sport fishing boats, see NOAA Chart for more information.

Concerned About the Impact of Offshore Drilling to Florida?

During a special legislative session called by Florida Governor Charlie Crist, State Republicans decided Floridians don't have the right to vote on offshore drilling within Florida waters. If you're a Florida Resident, contact your representative and make sure they know what you think about offshore oil drilling in Florida.

Republican Florida State Senator Mike Haridopolos, which is next in line to be President of the Florida Senate, has sponsored SB 2622 which allows for drilling for oil as close as three miles from Florida's Beaches. If you're a Florida resident, call him at (321) 752-3131 or (850) 487-5056 or email mike@senatormike.com and tell him what you think about drilling three miles off Florida's Beaches.
