Ponte Vedra Beach

Ponte Vedra Beach is a very upscale, seaside community situated 18 miles to the southeast of downtown Jacksonville. Located in St John's County, its one of the wealthiest areas in Florida, just behind the Palm Beach and Naples. Ponte Vedra Beach is known for two things, posh resorts and pristine golf courses, but they do have great beaches as well as having the Guana Tolomato Matanzas National Estuarine Research Reserve located there. Some of the swankiest of the resorts are the Ponte Vedra Inn & Club, the Lodge and Club, and the Marriott at Sawgrass.

Places to Stay

In 1972, developer James Stockton Jr. broke ground on the Sawgrass development, which combines luxury accommodation with an excellent golfing experience. Since then, this world-renowned resort has become famous for its topnotch service. You can stay in one of three types of rooms, an elegant guestroom, suite or villa. The spa there has 19 private treatment rooms, workout and movement studios, a heated pool, Jacuzzi, massage pavilions and a place to get a manicure and pedicure.

The Cabana Beach Club, only a short drive from the Sawgrass, is their exclusive beach access, with private parking, beach rentals and poolside food and drink services. This is a great place for a family vacation and was named one of the 50 favorite family hotels by Better Homes and Gardens. The Sawgrass is also an elegant place for an upscale wedding.

In 1922, the National Lead Company built the first golf course, a 9-hole course, for its employees, but they also built a club house and polo field, and in 1937, this became the world famous Ponte Vedra Inn & Club. This clubhouse and golf course was the start of the resort community. Robert Trent Jones, grand course designer, was commissioned to expand the existing Ponte Vedra Inn & Club golf course to 27 holes and in 1997, the Ponte Vedra Inn & Club and the Lodge & Club combined and became the Ponte Vedra Beach Resorts.

The Ponte Vedra Inn & Club has 250 rooms and suites, most being ocean front rooms, while the Lodge & Club has 24 suites, 8 preferred rooms and 32 deluxe rooms that all have oceanfront patios or balconies that are very luxurious.

The beach there is wide and sandy, great for laying out getting a tan or looking for shells, as lifeguards watch over all guests. Beach umbrellas, chairs, boogie and surf boards, ocean kayaks, sailing catamarans, and bicycles are all available to be rented. If the pool is more your place for sun and fun, you'll love the big pools and Tiki huts that make lounging in these areas so inviting, not to mention that you can also get towels and refreshments there.

The fitness centers at both clubs are spacious with state of the art exercise equipment, free weights and classes. The Ponte Vedra Inn & Club opened Florida's original spa in 1987, and in 2006, they opened the area's largest 30,000 square feet. They have over 100 beauty services meant to relax and pamper guests as the luxury and grandeur are obvious everywhere.

At the resorts, they take family fun and safety very seriously, shown by having lifeguards all over their beach. The kids can enjoy dinner clubs, movies, crafts, games and pizza parties. They have a play ground at the Surf Club that has swings, a slide and a play boat. Every summer, they have a youth camp staffed with professional counselors where kids take beach walks, do arts and crafts and play games.

Golf at Ponte Vedra

Ponte Vedra is known for its golf courses and is the home of the ATP Tour, the PGA Tour, and the Players Championship is played at The Tournament Players Club at Sawgrass. Sawgrass is also the new home of the MPS Group Championships, a women's tennis tournament. Sawgrass has eight world-class championship golf courses, including two TPC Sawgrass courses and THE PLAYERS Stadium Course, which is ranked among the top 80 golf courses in the world according to Golf Magazine.

The Ponte Vedra Inn and Club is an AAA, five-diamond golf resort with 36 holes of golf. A golf clinic and packages are available.

The Guana Tolomato Matanzas National Estuarine Research Reserve

The Guana Tolomato Matanzas National Estuarine Research Reserve is located on Ponte Vedra Beach. This reserve has wetlands, woods and miles of protected beaches. Its part of a network of 26 protected coastal areas ranging from Alaska to Puerto Rico. The over 60,000 acres of the Reserve are made up of salt marsh and mangrove tidal wetlands, which include oyster beds, tidal lagoons, criteria habitat and offshore seas. The upland regions are pine flatwoods, maritime hammock, coastal strands and dunes, as well as mangroves.

Most of the beaches have limited public access, with the exception of Mickler's Landing and Guana Tolomato Matanzas National Estuarine Research Reserve. Golf, tennis and boating are other popular activities.
