Chill and relax at the SoBe Sandbar.
In the 15 miles of beaches known as South Beach in Miami, one of the busiest and most popular is Lummus Beach it is also known as Glitter Beach to the locals. Lummus Park and the adjacent Lummus Beach stretch from 6th street to 14th street. This is the place you'll find a wide, diverse mixture of teenagers, families, tourists and senior citizens all enjoying the Florida sunshine, beach and excellent beach facilities. At night you might find a local entertainer hanging out, doing his or her thing with a hat or case open for tips. It's everything you'd picture in your head that a tropical SoBe spot would look like.

The Park

Lummus Park is a sunny Palm tree filled place where you can sit back and relax on one of the many benches provided or you can ride your bike, skate, jog or power walk along the paths provided. Sometimes you'll find street vendors selling various things such as, hand woven baskets, t-shirts, sunglasses, beach necessities and such. Some days there may also be a drink, ice cream or hotdog cart around during the day, especially in the summer, great for grabbing a quick, inexpensive bite. The park provides excellent facilities too, showers and restrooms are available and metered parking is provided along Ocean Drive. At night you can take a moon filled, wind swept stroll or just sit and watch the stars as you listen to the waves on the beach. Incidentally the Lummus Park district is one of the last remaining residential neighborhoods in downtown Miami.

Colorful Lifeguard towers line Lummus Beach.
Lummus Beach is the beach where models go and pose for fashion magazine photo shoots, thus the nickname 'Glitter Beach', and where, because of the European influence on South Beach, topless sunbathing is tolerated. So pull up a beach towel plant yourself down on the sand and enjoy the view. Another great thing about this being one of the Art Deco area beaches is that the lifeguard towers are very colorful and easy to spot. You can rent an umbrella or beach chair and hang out on the sand and get a tan. One more feature that makes this beach so fun and popular is the sand bar, it's just feet off the beach and you can literally lie down in places and sunbathe. It's not a great beach to surf at though, there aren't really waves and with all the people mulling around in the water it's just as well.
