Washington Oaks Gardens State Park

Washington Oaks Gardens State Park is situated between the Atlantic Ocean and the Matanzas River. It’s a little over 30 minutes south of St. Augustine and just 2 miles south of Marineland. The park is so named because it was once owned by distant relative of President George Washington.

The gardens are well known for their, camellias, azaleas and roses and they have exotic species like bird of paradise and all are beautifully covered by an oak hammock. There is a footpath through the garden and several reflecting ponds stocked with huge Coy.

The main picnic area at Washington Oaks Gardens State Park is beneath big beautiful oaks they also provide a covered pavilion and grills. The picnic area also has a small children's playground and restroom facilities. They also have a visitors center that provides park information.

There are two places to fish in the park; the seawall in the Matanzas River and surf fishing from the beach.

The beaches at the Park are spectacular. They are famous for the unique shoreline of coquina rock formations both on and for a short distance off shore. No matter how many beaches you’ve been to you have to see this one it’s truly beautiful.

They also have several hiking and biking trails, they range from half a mile to 1.7 miles. Pets are allowed along the trails and in the picnic area but not in the gardens or on the beach. They must be well behaved and on a leash at all times.

Washington Oaks Gardens State Park is a beautiful place to visit. The water along the river is beautiful, the beach is truly unique. It’s a great place for a family to spend a day or hiking or biking then have a picnic.
