After more than fifteen years navigating the labyrinth of higher education as a university professor, doctoral student, and post-doctoral fellow, I have cultivated a broad, global perspective on university and college systems. Rarely, however, have I witnessed malfeasance so flagrant as what I encountered while mentoring a student at Hillsborough Community College’s Dale Mabry Campus. It is nothing short of astonishing that any institution purporting to nurture intellectual growth would coerce students into taking quizzes and exams during a state-mandated hurricane evacuation—an unconscionable display of disregard for both safety and common decency. This dereliction of duty extends even further: instructors exhibited appalling hostility toward students and, disconcertingly, the administrative staff responded with a level of apathy that permeated the entire chain of command.
My attempts to seek recourse with the Campus President revealed an institutional culture that values bureaucratic indifference over academic excellence or student well-being, suggesting systemic failure rather than isolated missteps. Given that my taxes contribute to this institution, I am compelled to question whether our local resources would be more judiciously allocated to vocational education programs—at least there, one might hope for some vestige of practical competence and empathy.
I am, quite frankly, aghast at the leadership vacuum and the woeful state of affairs at the Dale Mabry Campus. A comprehensive overhaul of campus management seems long overdue if there is any aspiration to repair its reputation—or restore even a baseline of educational integrity. For prospective students weighing their options, I urge you to explore all other avenues before acquiescing to this institution. Should you find yourself without alternatives, proceed with vigilance: record every lecture, save all correspondence, and guard your interests scrupulously. One would expect that an institution bearing the moniker of “higher education” might uphold a standard of care more befitting its mission; alas, the Dale Mabry Campus appears determined to prove otherwise.
This place is horrible! I’ve been to the “advisors” twice and had horrible experiences BOTH times. The first time, I was sent to advising only to be sent to another advisor. The other advisor asked why I was there and I told her I was sent there by the first advisor. She then directed me back to the original advisor, and as you suspect, we accomplished nothing.
The second time was the worst. I went to advising. He again, (same advisor) sent me to another advisor in a different building. The elevators weren’t working so I had to climb 4 flights of stairs. Finally got to the top, couldn’t find the room, so the Dean gave me directions. I get to the room and no one is in there. So I go to the closest office and knock on the door, as it was locked, and the instructor looked right at me and completely ignored me. Then, I went to the next room which was apparently connected to the room I knocked on, and I talked to the instructor that ignored me. She couldn’t give me instruction on how to get someone in advising so she told me to just knock on the door. When I told her I had already done that she asked another instructor that was strolling by. Finally, I get the area where I wait. I sign in, wait 11 minutes, see the advisor go into her office, wait another 11 minutes, then receive a text message from her with the wrong information on it, so instead of replying back and forth I figured I’d go see her in her office. She opens the door and so rudely asks why I’m there and tells me I have to wait. I explained to her the situation l and how I thought it would be easier to speak with her directly and that I had been waiting in that building for half hour, trying to figure stuff out and she tells me, “mmmm no you haven’t. You just checked in 11 minutes ago.” So I tell her I checked in 22 minutes ago, and that I was there waiting for her before she even got back and she continues to argue with me, “no you weren’t” I said, “I feel like I’m being attacked here. I’ve been here half an hour trying to see you.” So she says, “no you haven’t.” Ummmmm ….. HOW WOULD YOU EVEN KNOW WHAT I WAS DOING WHEN YOU WEREN’T HERE!?! She would NOT listen or hear me out and was EXTREMELY reluctant to help and acted as if I was bothering her by expecting her to do her job, and then when she did finally offer to help me she continued to argue with me about the time I had been there AGAIN, so I walked out. She apparently LOVES to argue. So thank you LATRECIA RICE for being SO RUDE and UNPROFESSIONAL! You made my college choice VERY easy as I will NOT be attending this college, I’d rather pay 4x the tuition to get quality treatment by advisors who actually CARE about you. And if you don’t like your job, which is what it seems like, YOU should probably consider a career change yourself seeing as how you are SO MISERABLE. I hope you find happiness.
Not to mention, this school is LITERALLY falling apart. Horrible management here. I understand why this facility has so many 1 star ratings! I would give it 0 if I could!
I simply just like this campus for 3 reasons. First, Parking lot is free. You don’t have to pay any fee like USF. Second, staffs are friendly. You might see many people complaints about employees, but to me personally, I feel they are doing very well (especially staffs in Library). Finally, the most important thing is 99% of Professors always try to help students when they have any problem. Therefore, I didn’t regret for choosing this school and this campus.
This school constantly fails me. Not only was I supposed to graduate 2 semesters ago, they fail to inform you that you do not have enough credits to graduate until the day of even when you check up on your stats every semester. This fall I took my stat class and now they are telling me that I do not have any applicable programs to apply for Graduation. I continue to try and do the steps necessary bit ever time I get one step closer they take 5 steps back. This is unbelievable and at this point I’m wondering if it’s even worth it to continue my education at all, it seems like nobody cares and that they are trying to tell me that education is not met for me.
INVI GRAYES is the absolute worst Supervisor. If you need assistance in the Admissions, Records, and Registration Department do everything in your power to avoid her!! This institution caused my USF application to be cancelled because of missing required documentation that should have been sent from here! I have an email saying “Congrats Graduate” while at the same time my Hawk GPS is saying I’m 97% complete. What a contradiction! The last day of the semester was 12/10/2024 I didn’t receive acknowledgment that I actually graduated until 1/5/2025 @10:56pm which was a Sunday and two days before the payment deadline for the Spring. Based on my USF Application being cancelled I registered for 3 classes at HCC back in December so I’m not out of school for a whole semester. Those 3 classes “were” covered under financial aid until they finally acknowledged I graduated on 1/5/2025 which caused my financial aid to be taken back which led to my classes being dropped on 1/7/2025. I was unaware my financial aid status had changed because the last time I checked it was all set. Everyone I know encountered attempted to make this my fault, no one took an ounce of responsibility for any of it and an individual in Admissions named “Julia” blatantly lied to my faced about a transcript being ordered too soon. it was a lie because that transcript was ordered from FIU to USF so she would have no record of it and instead of saying she didn’t see it or didn’t know she lied. I would like to commend the Dean of Student Services he heard me out acknowledged where mistakes had been made on their part and did everything he could to get me enrolled back into one of the classes I was dropped from. Overall I’ve had a terrible experience here, Joseph Bentrovato is the only bright spot!! I would not recommend this institution there were more errors and inconveniences to share this was just from my latest debacle and my final straw with this place!
